A few terms defined

The terms of the net can be confusing. What does it a tweet mean? What does Facebook really do? Here are a few terms to help get you started in your understanding.

Social Networking – A website or network where people share common interests or goals. This could be both professional or personal. Some more popular social networks are LinkedIn (for business connection), Facebook, MySpace (which is becoming much less popular) and Google+

Twitter (Tweet) – Twitter is a way of communicating in 150 words or less. The purpose is to share quick, short pieces of information. Others can subscribe to your stream of communication and receive updates from you. These updates can include text, photos and even video. To tweet is the action verb for composing a message.

Web 3.0 – This is a buzz word for the fully customizable web. Some services are moving towards a Web 3.0 structure, where you go to a website and the site is customizable to your needs. Websites such as Google and Amazon are already including these types of features.

Augmented Reality – The ability to use a mobile device (or a smart phone) as a viewfinder to add too or adjust your current surrounding. An example of this is an app called Layer. Layer allows you to hold your phone up in front of your face and look at the screen. The screen shows you what you already see in front of you, but you then have the ability to add things to what you see. An example of this would be the ability to find a restaurant.
